Sketchbooks, 1868-1869.

Consists of 120 pencil drawings of buildings and architectural ornaments done by Chandler between August, 1868 and December, 1869 when he was a student at Atelier Daumet. The first sketchbook is inscribed "Atelier Daumet" and only one date, December 9, 1869, is given. The drawings are primarily of designs for architectural ornament in the Gothic style, including wrought iron finials, roof dovetailing, stone carvings, wood carvings, inlay, moldings, floral designs, tombstones, pilasters, and columns. Also featured are copies from plates in the Building News and the Illustrated London News. Several of the dwellings depicted contain the note "building now." The second volume is inscribed "Atelier Daumet Rue du Tour St. germain, Paris," and opens with a list of Gothic buildings in Paris followed by an itinerary for a trip from Amiens through Belgium and back to Paris in August, 1868. Cathedrals, hotels, Gothic houses, and a windmill are featured. At times, Chandler commented on the moldings or other decorative elements. The sketchbook also contains drawings of buildings dated April, 1869. Most of the captions are in French. The last sketchbook, dated April, May, and July, 1868, contains drawings of Gothic buildings from Northern France, including cathedrals, churches, and houses in Rouen and Caen, the exterior of Notre Dame, and Mt. St. Michael as seen from the Sands. Also included is a wash drawing of an original design of an architectural ornament.
